Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg is a relatively young city by both Russian and European standards. It was founded in 1703 by the Tsar Peter the Great. Despite beijng young, the city has a rich and exciting history. The centre of the city and a group of monuments consitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Numerous architectural ensembles, bridges of the Neva River, and the White Nights attract millions of tourists from all over the world.
At the same time, Saint Petersburg is a modern metropolis with the population of 5 million. Saint Petersburg has more than 5,500 sports facilities enabling it to host sporting competitions on a very high level. New infrastructure is continuously developing in the city.
Martial Arts and Combat Sports are popular in Saint Petersburg. More than 35,000 children and youngsters practice Martial Arts and Combat Sports at schools. More than 60 international competitions in these sports are held in Saint Petersburg anually. The city has already hosted major events as the 2007 World Fencing Championship, the 2008 World Sambo Championship, the 2010 World Ju-Jitsu Championship, the 2010 WTF European Taekwondo, and the WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championship.
